Most of us know about the purifying qualities of sage, and that it is used for smudging or blessing yourself, home, family, and your environment. Holy Sage is used by many Native American tribes and other tribal societies as a sacrament or an important part of ceremonies; sage is thought to bring blessing from higher power or Great spirit, to enhance and promote prayer and meditation.

I will talk about smudging with sage, or how to use in prayer and blessing ceremonies a bit in my next few entries.

There are many types of sage and many uses of the various plants, certain varieties are used in medicine, and other types for ceremonial reasons. Holy sage is refereed to as sage brush; sage is a member of the wormwood (used in many types of medicine) family and grows naturally in desolated areas. This kind of sage (Holy Sage) grows naturally in many parts of the western United States; Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, Northern Arizona, Utah, Washington State and parts of Canada. This type is not to be confused with the type of sage used in cooking (which is actually a member of the Mint family).

The Sage of Holy sage can brush of 15 feet or more and can live over 100 years (this is the type used by many southwest Indian tribes). In the United States there are around eight or nine different spices of sage. Holy or Sacred Sage has been used by humanity for eons; the aromatic quality of Holy Sage has been used for prayer or meditation throughout history. A lot of study and literature has been devoted to the plant

As with any herb used in healing some individuals have allergies; A Doctors approval must be obtained before beginning any, any new routine.
