People living in Europe, as well as parts of Asia, and Africa will be treated to a partial solar eclipse tomorrow morning, January 4th 2011. This coincides with the Quadrantids meteor shower, which will be visible in the U.S. between 11:00PM on January 3rd 2011 and 6:00AM January 4th, 2011.
While watching this beautiful shower you will be viewing a tapestry of astrological history as much as a dazzling light show. At its peak, the shower will have about 40 meteors per hour. The best time to view the shower will be between 2:30AM and dawn.
The area in which the meteor shower will take place, formerly Quadrans Muralis, roughly between the big and little dipper is also home to several now defunct constellations. Once the sky was ‘officially’ divided up among 88 constellations in 1930, several pre-existing formations did not make the cut.
See if you can spot former constellations such as “Argo Navis,” “Apis,” the bee, “Solarium,” the sundial, or “Felis”, the cat.
